The Edwards Mansion field trip is now set for Wednesday, April 25th at 11 am. Edwards Mansion is located just north of Interstate 10 adjacent to the San Bernardino County Museum at 2064 Orange Tree Lane in Redlands. Take California Street exit off of I-10, and proceed north on California to Orange Tree Lane, and turn right. You will see a sign where to turn
into the mansion. Please park in the large parking lot behind the church (which is beyond the mansion) and we'll meet by the front steps of the mansion. The tour will last about 45 minutes to 1 hour. And the best part? -- the tour is FREE!

Edwards Mansion is most famous now for hosting numerous weddings, receptions, banquets, and other special events. Besides the beautiful Victorian style house, there is also a wedding chapel, several gazebos, party pavilions, and beautiful gardens on the four-acre site. The house originally was built on Cajon Street in Redlands in 1890. It has been used as a boarding house, a family residence, and even office quarters. In 1973, the house was purchased for $1.00, cut into two sections, and moved five miles to its present location. There is a website that you can visit at www.edwardsmansion.com.

I think we already have about 20-30 people interested in the trip, but there's always room for more. If the date is not good for you, please contact me as I may be setting up an alternate time for some people.

QUESTION.... I am checking around to see if there is enough interest in a drama workshop to have the Covenant Players come on Oct 29 for and all day workshop with performance in the evening. It would be at Twin Peaks Community Church. If there is enough interest (about 15-20 families at least), the cost would be around $15-20 per family. Please e-mail me and let me know if you're interested. They performed at Twin Peaks Community a few weeks ago and it was great. See www.covenantplayers.org for more info on this group.

From Sharon: I am currently trying to arrange classes on the mountain for ICR to teach on creation. They offer a 1/2 day class for k-6th graders with parent for $12-$15 per student and a 3 day class for 7-12th for $35-$40. I think it will be awesome if we can get them up here. I have to have a location and am waiting for the forms. It will be sometime between Jan and June of 2002 so save your pennies if interested.

September 14, 2001: 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m., Riley's Log Cabin Field trip

In case you don't realize it, Sharon Riley's farm is different from the other Riley's farm, and I've been on her tour before and it's GREAT. Sharon is the one you meet each year at CHEA. She's got a 4 hour trip planned for us, with sack lunch (you bring) in the middle. Here are the details:

$8 each, adult or child
$1.50 if you want a hand-dipped fresh caramel apple (they are the BEST in the entire world in my opinion). They really want to know the number in advance of those who are adding caramel apples.

We MUST be there by 9:30, and it will take at LEAST one hour to get there from the Lake Arrowhead area.

We'll start with Dennis Riley's famous fiddling and music. (BTW, did you know that he's one of Lake Arrowhead fiddler Addam Thompson's mentors?)

Then we'll do:

gold panning
corn husk doll making
etiquette

AND
corn grinding (suggested for younger children)
OR
Civil War interpretation (suggested for older kids)

The Civil War interpretation is done by one of Sharon & Dennis's sons who has been doing this for 10 years.

Apple season will be in full swing at this time, so this is a great time to go!

Please RSVP and mail your check for $8 (or $9.50 with caramel apple) per person to Mary Leggewie, PO Box 1004, Twin Peaks, CA 92391. I need to have it by September 1 so I can give Sharon a firm count. No refunds.

Tuesday, October 2, 2001: San Bernardino Museum of Natural History

All About Bugs (hands on classroom agenda), Star Lab

Cost $4.00 per student $5.00 per adult (this is $1. higher than usual to accommodate the Star Lab fee)

8:45am to start classes at 9:am (don't be late as we have back to back classes with time limits and if you are late it will affect the entire group.)

There will be two separate groups of K-4th and 5th-12th to try to accommodate learning levels more effectively. The young group will do the bug lab first while the older group is in the star lab. Then we will reverse the classes. We will have time to roam the museum on our own for as long as you wish after the organized classes are finished.

Take the California Street exit off the 10 fwy in Redlands and the museum is on the street running along the north side of the fwy. to theEast (right).

Parental supervision will be required for the classes and, of course, proper museum behavior.

Please send in check to me by September 24th so I'll have an accurate accounting of who to expect.

Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001: Paintball
Time 2-4 p.m. arrive at least 15-20 minutes early (especially if you've never gone to Thousand Pines camp and Paintball before). cost is $10. per student if we receive the payment and required parent signed permission slips before Wednesday, Oct. 10th.

Late registration will be $11.00 per player. (It causes great confusion to register and pay at the place.)

All equipment is provided by the camp. Safety rules must be adhered to or you will be asked to leave the game or given a time out from play. Location is Thousand Pines campground. Parking lot A . Hike back past the conference center and find the road that leads down and left which is marked with a banner that says paintball games. Meet at the amphitheater. Rules will be given at that time and permission slips checked. The rules take some time and if you are late they have to start all over as it is a safety issue. The guns are set a 270 so it doesn't hurt as much as many guns that are set as high as 900 at times. My kids love doing this and my youngest is only 9 so it is ok for younger kids or adults.

For faxed permission slips please call Tim at 337-0926 or Thousand Pines and talk to Julie in the office. Thanks. If not sending your check until the last minute, please rsvp by phone ahead of time so we'll have an accurate count of who is coming.

November 30, 2001: Alpine Conference Center Ropes Course

I am working with Alpine to arrange a ropes course. It will probably be 8 hours on Nov. 30. We get a mountain homeschool discount of $26.00 per person. (1/2 day would be $18. if we do that instead) The usual price is $35. or $24. respectively, so this is a good savings. They offer a hot lunch for $6. per person or you can bring your own. Info will follow on what all is involved as well as insurance wavers and other insurance info. This sounds really cool and teaches team work, critical thinking, initiative, problem solving and personal challenges. Their top priority is SAFETY so no one gets hurt. Parents are welcome to participate as well but kids need to be 5th grade and up to join in. They do morning activities to assess ability and initiative and a low ropes course. Then the afternoon course has ropes challenges anywhere from 30' to 100' off the ground. All are done with harnesses for safety.

Alpine is also arranging a special outdoor science program for homeschoolers. It will be a variety of different day courses to do with astronomy, trails, eco system and one or two others. I will let you know up dates on activities as I book them.

Please let me know if you have interest in the rope courses and if your preference would be all day or half day. Thanks, Sharon at 337-0926.
