Monday, Feb. 10, 12-2:30 Valentine Party & exchange
Plan to bring a bag to collect valentines as well as lots to exchange. (30-60 are probably wise) If you don't want to do more than one package, that is fine as we line up the bags and have the kids start at different points so all kids get plenty of valentines for their bags. Bring some cookies or goodies or non-staining drink (7up) with cups. E mail me with what you'd like to bring so I can make a list. We'll need to clean up afterwards. This is at the Baptist Church on 173 north of the Lake in Arrowhead. Meet on the ground floor gym. The kids can also bring a basket ball to play after the exchange. All those attending need to fill out a waiver on each member of their family to release the church from any and all liability. RSVP please. I planned it early in case we snowed out and need to re-schedule. Please RSVP for each trip individually to Sharon Carl: homeschool@drbilly.com
Thursday, Feb. 13, 9:15am. Arrowhead Veterinary Hospital in Blue Jay Mall. FULL

Arrive at 12:45 for 1pm tour. Coming from North Bay in Blue Jay, turn left onto Penninsula and turn right onto Rhine, Right on Bernina and park anywhere on street. The plant is pretty much on the corner a little in from Rhine. We will have a nifty tour of the plant and then (if construction at the site permits) we will caravan over to a new plant in Cedar Glen for the continuation of the tour. The two plants are different enough that it would be worthwhile to see both. If we can only do Bernina, we will be there for 45 minutes to 1 hour. RSVP with numbers and ages to Sharon Carl: homeschool@drbilly.com
Wed, April 2, 2003 Fender Music and Art Museum in Riverside
Arrive 10:45 for 11 am tour. Don't be late.
You should probably allow at least 1 hour from Arrowhead. It is the far side of
Riverside out by the 15 and 91 intersection. We need a minimum of 25 people to
do this one so I'll need non-refundable payment sent in to me no later than Feb,
21, Friday
to Sharon Carl . The cost is $2. per student and $3. per adult.
No one under kindergarten should attend. We will have someone tell us the history
of the Fender Company, will have a self guided tour of the 5000 sq. ft. museum
and be allowed to try out the drums and guitars but taking timed turns so all
get a chance. There is a grassy area for picnics or a Burger King next door for
lunch. Take the 91 to Riverside all the way out to the 15 fwy. Exit off 19 onto
Main Street, go North (right) to 2nd signal. They are on corner of Harrison
& Main. 365 N. Main St. 909 735-2440. Please RSVP and send in your check asap
if interested. RSVP for each
trip individually. As a side note, if you are
interested, the Magnolia Bird Farm is not far from here if you want to go early
or afterward. It is south of the 91 on Magnolia if I'm not mistaken. You should
probably call to confirm directions. There is also a reptile store in that vicinity
that is interesting although I don't recall the name. Also south of the 91 in
a mini mall. Atco School Supply is out there too, if you need to re-stock on supplies.
Their number is 909 272 2926.
Please RSVP for each trip individually. RSVP
to Sharon Carl: homeschool@drbilly.com
March 13, 2003 Thursday Baptist Gym, Lake Arrowhead, for basketball game, from 12-2:30.
Bring ball and whatever other equipment you need and a good sports attitude. RSVP so we'll know who to expect. We are not allowed to go upstairs nor play on the climbing wall or the skate ramps, but should be able to have fun and a good workout to boot! We will try this again once a month in the months following if this is a success. All who attend will need to fill out a waiver for the church in case of accident. If you filled one out for the Valentine party the prior month, they will still have it on file. Please RSVP for each trip individually to Sharon Carl: homeschool@drbilly.com
Thursday, March 20 Cal Trans Tour, arrive
9:45am for a 10am tour. Approximately 1 1/2 hours long, inside their building
facility in San Bernardino. They will forward directions to me in a couple of
weeks along with an agenda. I have requested that they show us how roads are made
and maintained, what they are made of, what is under the road, what specifications
are necessary to build freeways in an earthquake state and any other pertinent
information that might be of interest to our kids.
I suspect this will
be a fun and informative tour. They haven't done this before but are anxious to
comply with our request. Please rsvp by e-mail only and watch your e-mail for
directions and a
list of who is attending. This will be sent out a few days
before the tour.
Directions: Go down the mountain and continue on Waterman
Ave., continue a few miles down and then go Right on Rialto, Left on Allen and
right on Cluster. The address is 175 E. Cluster St., San Bernardino. See you there.
Please keep the directions for reference.

March 27, 2003 Farley the Fiddler performs Johnny Appleseed & the Gold Rush Period
Gary Francisco (aka "Farley the Fiddler") is a musician and performer who is going to do two presentations for Lake Arrowhead Christian School on March 27. According to Chryl at Arrowhead Arts, he's superb! Gary has performed all over--Knotts, Riley's, Disneyland, and he does lots of school and library performances. This program is FREE!
Grades K-3 Johnny Appleseed
12:30-1:20
Grades 4-12th the gold rush period 1:35-2:30
Please RSVP to me (Mary Leggewie) by March 20 so I can get the numbers to Chryl. And be sure to thank Randy Leonard of Lake Arrowhead Christian for generously including the homeschool community in a performance they paid for!
April 22, 2003 Mock Trial at the Supreme Court in Twin Peaks
April 22, Tuesday, 9am (Don't be late!!!!) Approximately 3 hours parking our behind the courthouse and meet outside in the back area. I have arranged a Mock Trial at the courthouse and tour with the judge of his quarters as well as the rest of the court and sheriff station in Twin Peaks.
This is a pre-rehearsed
trial so anyone signing up that is chosen for a part will have to be available
to come to my home for at least two rehearsals approximately one hour each. Not
everyone that attends will have a part but some will be in the audience which
is also a necessary part of the trial. It is very educational and well worth doing.
Anyone participating must be a very good reader ( this is the judges
stipulation
to make the proceedings go smoothly) as well as cooperative with me and not a
problem student. This is the time to award the top notch students and let them
strut their stuff. (I am quoting what I was told were their requirements.)
All in attendance MUST BE 5th grade or older. Parents are encouraged to stay with us and watch the proceedings as well, although no one under 5th grade will be allowed. The parts will be Judge, court clerk, bailiff, court reporter, district attorney, defense counsel, store clerk, customer, police officer, defendant, and jurors. There will be no rehearsal for the audience nor jurors, save two who will have small parts.
Please plan to dress according to proper office/courtroom attire. We will watch actual court arraignments first thing and must be extremely quiet and well behaved. No one should draw attention to themselves, nor get up and move around so as not to disturb the court or we will be escorted out by the bailiff. I have done this once before and it was a wonderful and interesting experience so I encourage you to plan on attending and participating. I will notify those of you chosen for parts so please include your names, ages, grades, and phone numbers so I can make the necessary decisions. Please RSVP to Sharon Carl by e-mail.

Monday, May 19, 2003 at 12-2:30 p.m. (11 a.m. for picnic lunch next door): Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana (http://www.discoverycube.org/)
Kids $8, adults $9 includes the laser show "The Illuminated Brain." We will begin our trip with a 10 minute explanation from our docent, and then we have about 45 minutes to explore the bottom floor. Then we move to the top floor for another 45 minutes or so. We finish up with a mini class, the "Southern California Science class," in which they will discuss California plants, history, and seismology. Plan on joining us for lunch at the attached park (park at the Discovery Science Center and go through the underground tunnel on foot to get to the park) so the kids can play and eat before we go in. That way if traffic is bad, you'll have extra leeway on time, and the kids won't be starved halfway through. If you are not joining us for lunch, please be there by 11:45 a.m. The reservations are under Mountains Christian Academy.
RSVP by the 9th WITH payment--I have to mail in a deposit in advance. Please RSVP by e-mail to Mary Leggewie and be sure to mail your payment (payable to Mary Leggewie) by May 9th to Mary Leggewie, PO Box 1004, Twin Peaks, CA 92391.

This should be a BLAST. Beth Johnson, our famed gospel quartet singer on the mountain, says this group is FANTASTIC! The Strawberry Festival starts at 4 p.m. with old-fashioned fun, food and strawberry shortcake! Then Cross Road Quartet starts at 6 p.m. (after the Johnson Family Quartet).

Monday,
June 2, 2003 at 10 a.m.: Raymond Alf Museum of Paleontology
I have
just arranged a field trip to the Raymond Alf Museum of Paleontology, the only
accredited paleontological museum on a high school campus in the country. This
is a spectacular museum that has just renovated its "Hall of Footprints."
This trip is appropriate for all ages, although I suspect that the docent-led
tour will be tailored to elementary school. Please arrive at 9:45 a.m.
The museum is on the campus of the Webb Schools of California, in Claremont. It takes one hour to get there from my home in Lake Arrowhead. This is an "Old Earth" museum, so please rsvp accordingly.
RSVP by e-mail to Mary Leggewie . This trip is limited to 35 students, and the price is $4 per family. You may pay me at the field trip or in advance by mail: PO Box 1004 Twin Peaks, CA 92391.
There is a cool skate park (free) in a park on Indian Hill just north of the high school, not too far from the museum if you want to bring your skating equipment (including helmets and safety gear--the police regularly ticket for non-compliance) and lunch to eat afterwards. The Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Gardens are also very close, as is the Claremont Folk Music Museum.
June 13, 14, 15, Friday-Sunday. California Homeschool Network's First Annual Family Expo!
At the Riverside Convention Center, it's both affordable and close to home! This is a FAMILY event. See the Web site for more details. Lonna Williams will be leading a seminar on writing, and I (Mary Leggewie) will be on panels for working parents and homeschooling preschool.

Or e-mail mary@homeschoolchristian.com
No
children, please, unless you can't come without them! There is no charge.

July 11, 12 & 13, 2003: CHEA Convention at the Ontario Convention Center
http://www.cheaofca.org/events.htm
Friday August 8: 10 a.m.- ??? Glen Helen Regional Park Waterslide.
We're on!!! Thanks to Louisa M's husband Tim, we've got free parking again!
Friday, August 8, 10 a.m.- ??? Glen Helen Regional Park Waterslide.
Oh, this is gonna be fun! Meet at the waterslide area at 10 a.m. (or later--whenever you show up is fine--they either close at 3 or 4--I can't remember!). (I will be late myself.) Let's aim to put our gear at the bottom of the waterslide in the shade. If you're coming, let me know just in case something forces us to cancel out. Just reply to this e-mail.
This waterpark is REALLY nice. It's clean, it's well supervised and fenced in. I was VERY impressed with it. I prefer it to Lake Gregory in that you aren't FREEZING with wind when you're wet. They actually DRAIN the whole waterpark on Sundays and CLEAN the whole thing out and refill it with fresh chorinated water on Monday/Tuesday! Amazing.
So, get down the mountain on the 330 or 18...
30 WEST
215 NORTH
You'll go up the gradual incline, and at Devore, you'll...
Exit Devore Road turn left, and it turns into Glen Helen Parkway (follow Glen Helen Regional Park signs). Follow along, past all the concert entrances. Enter GATE C--I think it's the last gate you'll come to.
Go in the front gate and tell them Tim Millington/Bob Lowry set up free parking for Mountain Homeschoolers. Parking is free if you tell them this. Then park at the waterpark (they'll point you in the right direction if you ask) and at that entrance. At the waterslide entrance, you'll pay $4 each for those over 3 (4 and up). ALL pay to enter the area, whether you swim or not, unless you're 3 or under.
NO GLASS--and they inspect the ice chests. No floaties, tubes, etc. You may rent life jackets for 50 cents and tubes for $5 for 2 hours or so.
There are restrooms and showers and a snack bar. There's not a lot of shade, but it does exist. Bring sunscreen, blankets, chairs, awning if you have it, and a picnic!
Mary Leggewie 337-7391
August 28, 2003: Winchester Cheese Factory Tour.

1 1/2 to 2 hour tour
1. Outdoors: pen, teenage heifers, expectant heifers & cows, perhaps milking viewing & discussion on cows
2. Inside- cheese making. Curds & Whey, step by step on cheese making.
Separate group a) walkthrough of cheese factory b) kitchen area snacks
Capri Sun, Cheese samples, animal crackers, apple wedges
Dairy bag. Pencil, stickers, coloring book, etc.

Monday, September 15, 2003 10-approx 11:30 or noon. Science Hike with Mr. Science
Due to popular demand, Robin is going to do some hikes. He has a great background in geology and botany, and he's a blast to be with on a hike. We took this hike last Sunday and thoroughly enjoyed it, so come along!
Meet 10 a.m. at the Heap's Peak Helibase road. Park right off the 18, before you get to the gate on the road up to the helicopter pad. It's just west of the dump. There are some trees at the bottom of the road, shading the road, and that's where we'll park in view of the 18.
The first part of the hike is very easy, and is on paved road, walking up to the helibase. If the gate is open at the bottom, we can most likely get a tour of the helicopter if it isn't out on a fire call. The kids will be able to climb in and ask questions of a real firefighter.
From there, we'll hike on a short, steep dirt trail to see a fern garden and a great view of all of Lake Arrowhead.
Bring water, sunscreen, and hats. The entire hike should easily be done by noon. You might consider bringing a picnic and eating at the arboreteum just down the road a bit west.
"Adventure Passes" are supposedly required, but I don't believe in this "demonstration project," so I'll be printing up some "educational field trip" signs to put on our windshields for anyone who wants to use one at their own risk. I am willing to fight the possible notice/ticket, but you might not be.
Cost $2 each,
maximum of $6
($1 each Mountains Christian Academy students, max $5)
Limited
size, so please rsvp right away! Mary@mountainschristian.com

Sharon
Riley says the yellowjackets have been a bit of a problem, so you might still
consider wearing long sleeves and long pants to protect yourself, and if
you are allergic, bring your medication if needed.
Closed toed shoes are also
recommended by Riley's. There is a gift shop that will be open all day. We will
have a lunch break, and they are offering lunch for purchase if you would like
(if reserved in advance, or you can bring your own. They are selling lunch for
$3.50 (not sure what's on the menu--call Riley's if interested 909 797 4061).
If you think you'd like to buy lunch, let me know if you can so I can just give
her an approximate number.
Please keep watch over your own children and their behavior so we can be a good example. You might take a granola bar for the kids to eat mid-morning since many of us will be eating breakfast earlier than usual! (I remember my kids being STARVED by lunch time).
We will assemble in the Appleseed Theater.
Farm Animals:
Dogs must not be petted, don't
chase chickens and ducks or pick them up. Sheep should not be fed while penned
or approached while grazing. Chick and duck feed may be made available for children
to feed with proper instruction.
Apple Trees:
Do not allow children to
pick apples, climb trees or pull on branches.Riley's is a "working apple
orchard" and depends on a marketable crop. Apple picking can be arranged
before or after the tour.
Safety:
As a working farm, we depend on tools
that can be dangerous to children. No tools or equipment should be touched unless
under supervision by farm staff. Children should not be allowed to explore the
farm themselves. The farm is not a park. Wild animals frequent the woods and orchards.
Snakes take shelter in tall grass and under logs. Stinging nettle abounds in creek
beds. Children should stay on cleared pathways.
Common Sense:
Walk, don't
run. Sticks and rocks should lay where nature puts them. Fences are boundaries,
not benches. Wear a jacket and long pants when cold weather approaches. Period
attire welcome! Advise staff of any medical problems or medications before tour
begins.
The Log Cabin:
The log cabin is Dennis & Sharon's home and
is not open for viewing. It was built in 1979 from logs shipped from Montana and
is heated with wood!
October 3rd, Friday 8:50am
to start at 9am. Mountain Man Days at Gillman Ranch
$5.per student
$2.50
per chaperone
Kindergarten and under are free.
Bring exact cash to pay on your own. THEY DO NOT ACCEPT CHECKS!! Bring a lunch to picnic as the grounds are lovely and you'll probably want to spend the day wandering around after the main festivities. There are eating places about 5miles back toward the fwy.
This is an historic stagecoach stop with museum with lots of things to see. We will be there when the mountain men are doing their realistic encampment. It is so fun to see them dressed in the authentic attire of the period. They each have their own crafts that they will be working on and explaining to us as we tour. Some indians will be their in authentic teepees and will give us a tour of the inside and a glimpse into their lifestyle and tools they use. We will get to pan for gold if time permits. This is a wonderful field trip and the weather is usually quite lovely for a day out of doors. It's a very informative and memorable experience for parents and kids so try to make it out.
I will need to know how many
people to plan on so we don't hold more spots than we need. Please, if you sign
up and can't make it, let me know ahead of time. Plan on bringing a little extra
cash for fun
souveniers either in the museum or from the mountain men themselves.
Take
10 East to Banning (out past Yukaipa), off on 22nd St and go left, R on Ramsey,
L on 16 th St (by Ramsey Ford) all the way up (north to to of 16th street. Street
ends at ranch. Enter driveway across the road and slightly to the right. Follow
slowly up the road and park near the metal building. We will meet in that area
as The Lake Arrowhead Homeschool group. RSVP by 9/29.

Friday,
October 17, 2003 Homeschool Olympics San Moritz Ball Field, Lake Gregory
Take
Hwy 18 , right on Lake Gregory Drive (just before Cliffhanger Restaurant), then
right on San Moritz and follow the road about 1 mile or so until you can turn
in at the ball field . This is at the
opposite end of the Lake from the water
slide. Meet under the trees by the ball field and bring your runnin' shoes!
Let's get as many kids and moms together next Friday at San Moritz Ball Field in Lake Gregory to have a fun day of races and other silly contests. This is not endurance just fun. It is always more fun the more kids there are to participate, so please try to attend. If the weather turns really cold or rains we will re-schedule so check out your e-mail in case of changes. Bring jump ropes and get practiced up for the jump rope contest ( who can jump the longest without missing). Bring marbles for a marble tournament. Everybody will keep their own marbles as we don't want anyone losing their marbles (besides me).
We will have the world tournament
playoffs for rock, paper, scissors and many other fun things to do. Bring snacks
and drinks. I'm not sure the water fountain works so bring lots of water for the
players.
If you have gunny sacks or any other fun things to bring along, please
do and let me know ahead of time. I am open to other ideas if anyone wants to
organize an event. WE will try to do the running broad jump and standing broad
jump. There will be fun instead of prizes since we are all winners!
If it is
hot, water balloons prepared ahead of time and closely guarded could be fun but
we'd have to pick up all the debris afterward and it can get pretty wild. I will
need other moms to help officiate on the day. (anyone have a bullhorn????)
I
would appreciate RSVP's so we'll have an idea of who to look for.
Pass the
word,
Sharon Carl
October 21, 9:45am Los Angeles Museums
Cost $5.00 per family, $6. parking fee per car.
Natural History Museum. phone # 213 763-3466 We will enter together, so plan for traffic so you won't be late as it will take lots of time to see and do everything available to us. We will be on our own to do a self-guided tour. These are wonderful museums with a wide variety of things to look at. Be sure not to miss any of the exhibits. They have many exhibits with stuffed animal scenes, a live insect collection, a hands on exhibit with skins, bones and many other items to touch and become familiar with, pre-historic skeletons, aquariums, antique cars, war exhibits, and so much more.
At your leisure, wander over to the Air and Space Museum, they close at 1pm, and the science museum, which is open until 5pm. The science museum is awesome. Be sure to see the 50 foot woman. She explains how the body systems work and is interesting even for very young kids due to the way it is done. You will have to get a ticket with a specified time so get that first. There is no charge. They also have an aerial bike and gyro chair if you want to try those but they cost between $3.-$5. or so per person. They aerial bike is several stories high with a net under it and it is safe but quite exhilarating for the kids to ride. My sons had to rock it back and forth just to get my heart going even more! They have lots of hands on experiments, an earthquake machine and lots to do. You could easily spend an entire day in any one of these museums as there is so much to do and see.
Bring a lunch
to picnic on the grounds or there are places to eat inside. If you plan on those,
call ahead to make sure they are still there and get an idea of prices. There
use to be a McDonalds in the
science museum and a cafeteria in the natural
history, but I am not sure if they are still operating.
Call for directions or take 10 West to 110 South, exit Martin Luther King, Go right, R on Figueroa, L on 39th and enter the parking lot. $6. to park. You will walk to all museums from here. They all close at 5pm. This is across from the L.A. Colliseum and close to USC.
I need to let the museums know a definite head count by September
29th. Please rsvp with #'s and ages. Then I will need a non-refundable check
in the amount of $5.00 per family sent to me by October 3rd. Send the check
made out to Sharon Carl, to P.O. Box 5758, Blue Jay, Ca. 92317.
Please indicate
which field trip and number of paying adults and kids on the check.
Thanks,
Sharon

The March Field Air Museum offers an opportunity to share history with your students. On site, there are exhibits that will support your History, Science and Geography lessons. Students will take a walk through the past and will discover what really happened and what lessons have been learned.
The museums flight line boasts over 55 aircrafts, including the SR-71, the world's fastest known aircraft. They have gliders, bi-planes, fighters, bombers, cargo, rescue, reconnaissance, stealth, observation and refueling craft.
Inside the main hanger, there are dioramas that offer views of our past, sections that chronicle our military history, areas devoted to training equipment and archives that document our progress. The most important asset is the museums experienced volunteers who are more than willing to share historical facts, technical data, flight information and little known facts about the past.
The students will see what has been done to keep Americans free and understand what part we have had in preserving freedom for the rest of the world.
At the beginning of the tour there will be a 6 minute film about aircrafts. Then about a 30 minute tour inside the museum, followed by another 35 minutes touring outside where the aircrafts are. The total tour will be about 1-1/2 to 2 hours. Please get there about 15 minutes early so I can collect your money...bring exact change.
Please RSVP by November 1st by email. If you have any questions you can call me at 338-3160. The number for the Museum is (909) 655-3725.

December 12, 2003, 11a.m.-2 p.m. Homeschool Christmas Party
All homeschoolers and their families are invited to a Homeschool Christmas Party on Friday, December 12 at Lonna Williams' house, near Grandview School in Lake Arrowhead, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
This will be a pot-luck lunch event, so each mom or dad can bring a dish (when you RSVP, we can figure out what). Lonna will provide decorations, eating utensils, plates, cups, and drinks.
Enjoy the Christmas atmosphere,
fun games, crafts, and fellowship. We'll have a present exchange--just a simple
present from each homeschooler (white elephant or handmade are great--keep it
inexpensive--under $5), wrapped to put under the tree and then distribute later.
We could also have
a cookie exchange--bring your favorite dozen cookies (we
won't care if they're not homemade) and take home a dozen mixed ones. Both exchanges
are optional.
Dress Christmasy for fun. Expect a surprise skit from Lonna & her kids--with animal puppets telling about the Christ child born in a stable.
Please RSVP: e-mail Lonna or call her at 337-5261
Merry Christmas!
