February 13, 2004, 12-3 p.m.: Valentine Party at the Baptist Church, downstairs gym
RSVP to Sharon Carl by e-mail homeschool@drbilly.com
Everyone required by the church to fill out insurance waivers on each person
attending. The forms will be there when we arrive.
Come one, come all to our annual homeschool Valentine exchange party. Bring lots of valentines , 45-60 would be a good guess, but if you prefer to bring only 30, we arrange our exchange so that everyone comes out pretty even on what they take away. Bring along a fun home made box or bag that is already decorated to receive your valentines. We will line them along the floor in several rows and have the kids drop in their valentines.
If you'd like to bring a snack (finger foods) or cups/drinks/napkins etc.please
let me know so I can coordinate the effort. Let's stick with 7-up or other clear
drinks for the sake of non-staining purposes. Drinks are the priority as the
kids get very thirsty playing and we ran out last time. We will need to clean
the gym afterwards so that it is the way we found it. IMPORTANT NOTE TO PARENTS
AND KIDS!!! It is important to remember that we are guests at this church location
and act accordingly so that we will be welcome to use their facility again.
Please make sure that the children understand completely that they are to remain
in the gym and on the main floor only as they do not want us upstairs nor playing
on the stairs nor climbing the trees or damaging the property. We are not allowed
to use the climbing wall nor the skate ramps. Thanks for going over the rules
with your children before arriving. Bring along basketballs to play but we will
want the kids to confine the
ball playing to the far end of the gym so the little ones can play on the street
side of the gym.
IN the event that we get a horrendous snow storm, we will try to re-schedule
for the following week.
Please RSVP so I'll know how many to anticipate.

March 23 at 1:00 p.m. Homeschool Bowling at Rim Lanes in Crestline
Join us for a fun afternoon of bowling! Shoes are $1.50 and each game is $2.50. Last time we did this, one game was plenty for the little ones, and 2 was fine for the older ones. We'll have some lanes of bumper bowling set up for the littler ones. NO experience necessary!
RSVP to Mary by e-mail, please
March 20-? (two weeks?) Daffodil Walk, Running Springs.
This is an on your own hike but well worth the trip! This is a place to see
the beauty of many spring flowers and imagine the labor of love that it took
to accomplish this. It is quite a nice and easy dirt path through daffodils
and tulips and hyacinths. The woman that plants the flowers, opens it for about
two
weeks a year for others to enjoy. She requests that you keep your children quiet
and with you and on the path. DO NOT PICK THE FLOWERS! No strollers. It is just
off of hwy 330. Head over 18 and down the 330 to Live Oak and turn left and
park in the area of the Catholic Church. They have the restrooms open for the
hikes and there are usually some folks around to chat with if you like. This
opened last Saturday and is only for a short period. Be sure to go see and enjoy!
Daily 10-4

Thursdays, March 25, April 1, April 8, 1-3pm
Grass Valley Lake Park--Clay Class
(re-scheduling as needed for cold, wet weather). Cost including materials for
first two projects $35.00
I will be starting clay classes in the park this coming Thursday, March 25,
weather permitting. If you can't make it to the first class, contact me and
you should be able to start the following week. All ages welcome. This is a
beginning class and most materials will be included at the class, however, there
are a few items that you will need to bring with you and are listed below. Aflat
board or very heavy cardboard, either one will need to be covered with foil
an old knife, spoon, toothpicks, sponge, popsicle sticks or other homemade carving
tools (could also purchase store bought clay carving tools if desired) bring
a large container of water for use and clean up. (This is messy stuff) Paper
towels, one or two rags for clean up and to cover project to keep moist plastic
bag to cover project
If you have an item you'd like to copy, like a small frog or bunny, bring it
along. It is best to keep things close without thin appendages that can easily
be broken off. I will bring some things to copy also. Aprons!!! medium and small
paint brushes I have several greenware items that will be chosen from to sand
off the edges and then be sent to be fired. The students will be able to feel
and see what greenware is like. We will get them back at a later class to paint
and finish off. Also at the first class I will supply a block of fresh clay
for each student to begin forming their own project. This clay does not need
to be pounded to get air bubbles out but you will need to keep the projects
hollow by carving out or by building around a ball of newspaper which will need
to be removed before firing. Also,
it is important that the students do not fold the clay over itself which could
leave air bubbles in the clay and it will exploded during the firing taking
all the other projects out with it! We will keep projects on a fairly small
scale. If you are planning to make something to eat or drink from, a different
paint and additional firing process will be necessary which will cost a few
dollars more. Otherwise, we will paint with acrylics and spray with a sealer.
This is all done after the original firing and the project will be completed.
If you wish to do more than the original two projects and have them fired, there
will be a nominal additional fee.
We will attend a field trip to a pottery store to see how clay is fired and
perhaps do another project at that location. All are welcome to attend the field
trip regardless of whether or not you take this class.
The information will be forthcoming.
Please RSVP to Sharon Carl via e-mail or 909 337-0926 I will plan on other classes for water color, cake decorating etc., if there is an interest. Thanks, Sharon Carl

About the museum...
The March Field Air Museum offers an opportunity to share history with your
students. On site, there are exhibits that will support your History, Science
and Geography lessons. Students will take a walk through the past and will discover
what really happened and what lessons have been learned.
The museums flight line boasts over 55 aircrafts, including the SR-71, the world's fastest known aircraft. They have gliders, bi-planes, fighters, bombers, cargo, rescue, reconnaissance, stealth, observation and refueling craft.
Inside the main hanger, there are dioramas that offer views of our past, sections that chronicle our military history, areas devoted to training equipment and archives that document our progress. The most important asset is the museums experienced volunteers who are more than willing to share historical facts, technical data, flight information and little known facts about the past.
The students will see what has been done to keep Americans free and understand what part we have had in preserving freedom for the rest of the world.
Thanks,
Karen McPartland
April 30, 2004 HISTORY DAY--living quarters, Baptist Church of Lake Arrowhead in the Log Chapel: it is the street side, far end of the offices and not in the main Church, 11 am to show and tell our projects and then 1pm or so in the gym to play basketball. Have the kids make up a model of living quarters from something you are currently studying or have an interest in. IE : castle, mission, teepee, hogan, grass hut, longhouse, homes on the water as in Venice or over areas of wetlands (up on stilts), mountain cabins, etc. It would be wonderful to have a complete diorama and any outlying buildings indicative to the lifestyle depicted. Also, it would be great to have the kids research and provide a quick report on what they have done. Things can be made from grass/clay, cardboard, or panelling cut into the shape of the structure and overlaid with spackle to give it an old spanish look. You can buy kits of missions etc. or make them out of sugar cubes or homemade adobe bricks from ice trays. Give the kids their lead and stand back. If they would like to provide a picture or sample of food or animals or anything else that shows the lifestyle would be great. We will have a show and tell on April 30. Friday. Afterward we will play in the gym. More info

They will be giving all the kids (if we have 10 kids) a free membership, but without the free hours. In other words, you'll go right to the $3 per hour rate, and get a free e-mail address if you want it, but you won't get any free hours.

Word problems).
Friday, June 25, 10 a.m. Moonridge Animal Park, Big Bear
Contact Mary for more information. http://www.moonridgezoo.org/map/index.html
I just received the contract where the Big Bear Parks and Rec wanted me to sign my life away on behalf of everyone on the tour. They actually said in their contract that *I* would be responsible for their employees negligence! Needless to say, I cancelled the tour and would like to know if anyone just wants to meet there at the same time and go in together. I refuse to sign a contract that someone in law laughed at. They are open 10-5 with a presentation at noon, and feeding at 3. It's $5 ages 11-adult, $4 ages 3-10. Anyone interested? Please RSVP
Saturday, June 26, 1-3 p.m.: Homeschool Tea, Used Curriculum Sale, & Lending Library Open House
This will be at my house near Grandview School. E-mail for directions. Please invite your friends who are considering homeschooling to come. If there is enough interest, I will do a short presentation about homeschooling at 2 p.m.
I expect to have the library on-line by this time--come and check it out in
person! You can watch the "card" catalog grow here: http://www.mountainschristian.com/library.html
I'm probably 1/3 of the way
through now, and updating nightly. I have completed most of history, historical
fiction, biography and fiction. I will tackle homeschool parent helps next.
Start getting your curriculum together! You'll need to bring your own table, and box and price your things so that they will be easy to look through for shoppers.
Please bring a plate of something yummy to share. I'll provide tea, coffee, and cold drinks and paper goods.
If you can leave your young children at home, that would be wonderful, considering the number of children we'd have running around if they all came! If you have no choice, come with them, but please watch them.
Tuesday July 13, 2004: Cyber Mountain Gaming

September 13, 2004 1-5 p.m. Fife & Drum,
Family, & Homeschool Photos:
I have arranged with http://www.hammarphotography.com
to come up on September 13 (Monday) afternoon. There is a 1% chance we may have
to change the date, but I don't think it will be a problem. It will be at Church
of the Woods. We will be doing Fife & Drum photos as well as any homeschool
photos and family photos that anyone wants. You can preview their digital photos
online
and order that way, or by phone. If this date is not convenient, you may join
Faith Academy's photo day, to be announced. More news on appointment slots soon.
September 18/19, 25/26, October 2/3 Sea World's Sea to Shining Sea History weekends. Mountain Fifes and Drums will be performing. If you plan on going to Sea World this year, THESE are the weekends to go! There is a revolutionary war encampment of living historians, including General Washington! Wednesday, September 22, 2003 9:30-2: Riley's Log Cabin
Join us for our annual trek to apple country! This is a FAVORITE trip! Limit of 45kids.
Arrive at 9:30 for a 10 a.m. start. The drive from Twin Peaks is 1 hour.
Directions: Please take a map so you won't get lost.Take the 10 FWY east. About 6 miles east beyond the intersection of the 10 with the 30, exit the freeway in Yucaipa onto Yucaipa Blvd (left turn) and continue east on Yucaipa Blvd. and then turn north on Oak Glen Road. Continue on Oak Glen Road past the village of Oak Glen, and as it winds southward, you will come upon Riley's Log Cabin Farm and Orchard on the left.
We are going to Riley's LOG CABIN FARM AND ORCHARD, (NOT Riley's Farm). The
address is 12201 Oak Glen Road, Yucaipa.
Be sure to use the correct driveway (since two farms have similar names). The one we want has a LOG CABIN in the center of the sign and a banjo on the top right, and our name (Probably Arrowhead Homeschool or Mountains Christian Academy) will be on the sign.
www.rileysapplefarm.com (website under construction) owned by Dennis and Sharon Riley.
I need rsvps with payment as soon as possible! FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED. I have 45 spots for kids and any number of adults. Kids $10, adults $8 (corrected price on 9/8).
This is may not be the order of events, but there are the activities we'll be doing. You do not need to choose your options now. Here is how I have selected our 4 hours:
intro 30 minutes all
lunch 30 minutes all
frontier cabin 60 minutes all
Next hour:
Civil War solider interpretation 60 minutes for older kids
Younger kids during interpretation might prefer gold panning (30 min) and corn
grinding (30 minutes) (also ok if older kids prefer)
30 minutes
choose between cider press and nature walk
30 minutes
choose between archery for older kids or rope making for any age
Options:
Lunch of small sandwich, chips and drink $4.85
(choose one of these two: ham & swiss or turkey & provolone--I need
to know with your rsvp)
carmel apple (outrageous!) $2.25
pie slice $3.00
whole pie $10.78
Please detail what you're paying for with your rsvp and payment. Mail payment
to Mountains Christian Academy, PO Box 1004, Twin Peaks, CA 92391. Please e-mail
your rsvp before you mail payment. Please mail payment by Sept 10. Your check
will be deposited the day before the trip, and is non-refundable unless I can
fill your spot with someone else.
Here are the rules, etc. Please read now so if you have any questions you won't be panicking on the day of the trip!
I'm not sure if the bees are a problem this year, so you might still consider
wearing long sleeves and long pants to protect yourself, and if you are allergic,
bring your medication if needed.
Closed toed shoes are also recommended by Riley's. There is a gift shop that
will be open all day. We will have a lunch break, and they are offering lunch
for purchase if you would like (if reserved in advance), or you can bring your
own. If you think you'd like to buy lunch, let me know if you can so I can just
give her an approximate number.
Please keep watch over your own children and their behavior so we can be a good example. You might take a granola bar for the kids to eat mid-morning since many of us will be eating breakfast earlier than usual! (I remember my kids being STARVED by lunch time).
We will assemble in the Appleseed Theater.
Farm Animals:
Dogs must not be petted, don't chase chickens and ducks or pick them up. Sheep
should not be fed while penned or approached while grazing. Chick and duck feed
may be made available for children to feed with proper instruction.
Apple Trees:
Do not allow children to pick apples, climb trees or pull on branches.Riley's
is a "working apple orchard" and depends on a marketable crop. Apple
picking can be arranged before or after the tour.
Safety:
As a working farm, we depend on tools that can be dangerous to children. No
tools or equipment should be touched unless under supervision by farm staff.
Children should not be allowed to explore the farm themselves. The farm is not
a park. Wild animals frequent the woods and orchards. Snakes take shelter in
tall grass and under logs. Stinging nettle abounds in creek beds. Children should
stay on cleared pathways.
Common Sense:
Walk, don't run. Sticks and rocks should lay where nature puts them. Fences
are boundaries, not benches. Wear a jacket and long pants when cold weather
approaches. Period attire welcome! Advise staff of any medical problems or medications
before tour begins.
The Log Cabin:
The log cabin is Dennis & Sharon's home and is not open for viewing. It
was built in 1979 from logs shipped from Montana and is heated with wood!
I just booked 30 seats for the Lifehouse performance of Treasure Island. Those who rsvp first will get the best seats! If you've never been to Lifehouse, you'll love it! Many of the performers are homeschoolers, and it's a small theatre where every seat is a good seat!
Where: Lifehouse Theater http://www.lifehousetheater.com/prices.htm (see seats here) on Church St in Redlands (just north of the 10 at the Orange St exit).
When: Saturday, 9/25 at 2:15 (we need to be there by 1:45 or so)
Price: $10 per adult, $6 kid ages 3-11 (no kids under 3 permitted)
Please RSVP right away so if we need more seats I can call early. After I confirm, you'll mail payment to me since I've put down the deposit already and will be paying for the tickets.
RSVP by Sept 10. The seats I have reserved so far are row J & K.
October 9, 2004 4:00-8:30 p.m. Civil War Ball.
Lake Arrowhead Baptist Church
I've been to two now, and they are a BLAST!!! Marianne McCune calls the dances.
$10 per family to cover Mr & Mrs. McCune's gas and perhaps hotel. Start
looking up those costumes! Costumes are optional, but VERY fun. Here's
a link from my national site that has some GREAT tips on making inexpensive
costumes:
http://www2.homeschoolchristian.com/cgi-bin/fellowship3.cgi?read=80921
Be sure and click on all the links that are inside that link to see the
photos too.
If you can't do a costume, wear party clothes--a dress that spins for girls if you can, and nice slacks for the guys (unless you want to look like a soldier, which is OK!).
We'll be doing a "finger food" type potluck dinner. Everyone will bring their own paper goods (plates, napkins, cups, forks), and a 2 liter soda or juice to share. Please RSVP by 9/30. Mountain Fifes & Drums is also included in this event. Come without a date, ready to dance! Please encourage your men and boys to ask a variety of girls to dance--remind them that they'll probably only spend 10 seconds with the person they ask to start the dance since most dances change partners many times during the dance.
Any help setting up and cleaning up would be greatly appreciated so it won't just by my family cleaning up! Please volunteer know so I know.
