Monday, February 7, 2005, 12-2:30 VALENTINE
PARTY
Baptist Church Gym, Lake Arrowhead
North side of the Lake not far from the marina
The gym is the bottom level and enter through the double doors.
Everyone please bring enough valentines for about 45-60 kids. We usually have a good turnout. Also bring a decorated bag or box with your name on it to collect valentines from others.
Sign up by e-mail with what you'd like to bring. Non messy finger food if you please, and only clear drinks like7 UP or lemonade. We will need napkins, maybe forks, and cups, and plates.
REQUIRED: THE CHURCH REQUIRES EACH PARENT TO SIGN A RELEASE FORM ON EACH CHILD AND YOURSELF THAT WILL BE IN ATTENDANCE. IF YOU ATTEND THAT CHURCH, YOU CAN SIGN THOSE AHEAD OF TIME.
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CHILDREN RESPECT THE RULES OF THE CHURCH BY BEHAVING APPROPRIATELY AND NOT GOING UPSTAIRS OR RUNNING OVER THEIR PLANTS OUTSIDE.
Parents need to be there with their children for proper supervision and
form signing.
We can use the 1/2 court Basketball on the opposite side of the gym if
the little ones are on the front side so they won't get hurt. Clean up afterward
is necessary so please pitch in so we can use the free facility again! There
is a group in right after us so we'll need to leave the gym in good shape and
be out on time.
Thanks so much and RSVP with numbers of attendees and what refreshments
you plan to bring. Be sure to put "Valentine's Party" in the subject
line so my spam filter doesn't get it! Sharon

Sunday, February 20, Massing of the Colors
The Massing of the Colors is happening Sunday afternoon, February 20. This
is a GREAT history event! Re-enactors and color guards from all over
southern Cal will be on hand, in full uniform/costume. The speeches are
short, so it's even OK for little ones. Real muskets firing, real canon! We
have to be there at 2 p.m. for roll call, so I'm betting this event starts
at 2:30 or 3 p.m. Dress warmly--it's outside and in the sun.
See photos from 2 years ago (we were snowed in last year):
http://www.mountainfifesanddrums.org/album/2003/massing.html
Mountain Fifes & Drums will be performing there. They will be performing
at Lake Arrowhead Village on Saturday 2/19, and at Disneyland on Monday Feb

YoYo, and $15 being a professional quality one). The YoYos are made in

Lonna Williams' English Classes
Reminder
You may take 1, 2, or all 3 classes. All you need to bring is a brain, a
notebook, and a pen (homeschooling parents are optional and free).
See you Monday!
1. Monday, Feb. 28, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Lonna Williams' house (directions
below)
"English 100--What to Expect in a College English Class"
After earning a B.A. and M.A. from San Diego State University, securing a
Lifetime California Community College Teaching Credential in Language Arts
and Literature, and teaching at California Community Colleges for ten years,
I have some idea of what a freshman college student can expect in that first
English class. We will do a crash course in grammar, punctuation, and
appropriate style. Then we will tackle different types of sentences,
paragraph writing, and essay writing. We will finish off the day with a look
at the much-dreaded Research Paper with Bibliography. See how a real college
English teacher grades an essay. No need to purchase a book. I will
recommend several, as well as helpful handouts and study sheets. Bring a
notebook, pen, and a ready mind. We will make learning grammar an adventure
(jokes and funny stories included free). Pre-Class Assignment: Check out my
website at http://www.lonnawilliams.com. You will be assigned a short,
out-of-class essay (due the next week) that I will grade and return to you.
$12 per child. Older children encouraged (age 9 and up).
2. Monday, March 7, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Lonna Williams' house
"Writing for a Newspaper or Magazine--How to Get that Fascinating
Interview or Photo"
After writing top skater and coach interviews for a national figure
skating magazine and then the Worship page and Features for the "Mountain
News," I have come to know what the world of magazines and newspapers expect
in a good articles or interviews. I will give tips on getting that great
interview and then writing it; hints on conducting research; and ideas for
fascinating article subjects, with examples. We will also discuss
photography and the art of "giving it your best shot" (both digital
and
film). Humorous stories and inspirational interviews included, many of which
you can find on my website at http://www.lonnawilliams.com. Learn the
Reporter's Questions, how to take notes or use a voice recorder, and the
ethics of accurate reporting, serving your audience, and dealing with
controversy. As Mark Twain (who was a newspaper reporter in San Francisco
before writing books) once said, "First you learn the rules. Then you can
break them." You will be assigned an out-of-class magazine or newspaper
article, interview, or feature (due the next week) that I will grade and
return to you. $12 per child. Older children encouraged (age 9 and up).
3. Monday, March 14, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Lonna Williams' house
"Creative Writing, from Poetry to Novels"
My personal favorite, since I love to write books (check out my website at
http://www.lonnawilliams.com to see which types I write). We will start with
poetry, since it is the shortest form of writing. Then we will discuss the
short story and the novel (with some play writing thrown in). Learn to
"show" and not "tell"--that images are vital to poetry,
and that not all
poems rhyme. See what makes a good plot, interesting characters,
unforgettable settings, believable dialogue, compelling themes, startling
symbols, irony, surprises, etc.--all ingredients for a good novel. Learn
book genres (science fiction, fantasy, historical, romance, mystery,
nonfiction, etc.). Learn how to write chapters (lengths, themes, etc.),
amazing endings, critical climaxes, and beginnings that hook in the reader.
You will be assigned a writing project to be turned in at a later date,
graded by me, and returned to you. $12 per child. Older children encouraged
(age 9 and up).

Around February 17: Homeschool Drama with Betsy Moody
Attention All Dramatic Home Schoolers. Here we go again! I am wondering who would like to participate in drama with me? I can't plan a venue until I know who is interested. Depending on the number of students interested I may break into different groups.
Drama will definitely be on Thursdays. I personally have all day to devote to teaching. If I break into groups they may be as follows: Elementary (preschoolers to 6th grade) in the morning from say 10am to 11:30, Jr. High (7th and 8th) from 12:30 to 2:00 and high schoolers from 2:30 to 4:00. I know this may be a bit much if you have a child in each category, but the benefits hopefully will out way any negatives and this may be negotiable. Classes will be the same as last time. Donations only. But if your child or children are cast in any production they will need a costume. I am very definite about what I expect for the productions, so I may have specific requirements. (be prepared for that).
Also, I am very good with kids of all ages, but I expect a lot of home schooled
kids. I did have some behavior problems during the last plays. I will not tolerate
any this time. I am implementing the following consequences for misbehaving
in drama. If I encounter a problem with behavior, parents will be called. If
there is a second problem parents will be asked to sit with their child in the
next class. If there is a third problem, the child will not be
allowed to participate. I really hate to do this, but, disruptions affect everyone.
Now all that aside, I am excited to work with the most talented kids on the
mountain, so let me know who's interested by February 11th. Please let all your
home school friends know too. I had some late comers last time
and don't want to leave anyone out. Please pray for this endeavor, that the
Lord will bless it...I know He will provide just what is needed. Please call
Betsy Moody at (909) 336-0560 with any questions or comments and to sign up.
I would like to have the first class or classes on the 17th of February.
April 29 , 2005, 7:30 p.m. : LIFEHOUSE THEATER: Pollyanna
Lifehouse is doing a presentation of Pollyanna! Mountain homeschoolers Brooke,
Bailey, Brittany and Bonnie are all cast members and would
love to have fellow homeschoolers and mountain residents attend.
Pollyanna - An Endearing Classic
An entire town is turned upside-down as an irrepressible optimist in the guise
of an orphan girl wins the hearts of one and all with her "glad game".
But how will she cope when tragedy cripples her?
I have booked Friday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m. for 30 tickets in rows J&K.
If you want a closer seat (higher price ($14 for adults, $8 for kids), let me
know and I'll see what's still available (currently the first 4 rows are sold
out). See the seating chart on their Web site: http://www.lifehousetheater.com/seating.htm
Rows J&K (assigned according to who pays me first!) will be $10 per adult,
and $6 per child (ages 3-11). Let me know how many children and how many
adults, please. I need payment NOW, and it is non-refundable.
Please e-mail your RVSP including the breakdown of adults/children, and mail your payment to Mountains Christian Academy, PO Box 1004, Twin Peaks, CA 92391.
Let's go and cheer the girls on!!!

real master at balloons, and has some great Christian messages to go along

Please let me know if your child would like to perform something musical or
otherwise...perhaps recite a poem, etc. Any dancing can be done outside as
we did last year, and music etc. will be done inside. There is a nice grand
piano if we have any budding pianists.
Let me know if you'd like to have a show and tell display so we have enough tables set up to show off your children's treasures.
RSVP please! (And be aware that I will be out of town from May 14-26, so don't be worried if you don't get a reply till I return).
Math Classes by Robin Leggewie. See our Math page for details on upcoming classes beginning in September. Robin Leggewie of Mountains Christian Academy will be offering math courses in the following subjects if the minimum class enrollment is reached:
1. Advanced arithmetic (prepares for Algebra 1A)
2. Algebra 1A (minimum met)
3. Algebra 1B (beginning at the end of Jan 2005)
4. Geometry (minimum met, prerequiste of Algebra 1A) (continuing from Jan-June
for 2nd sem)
5. Word problems.
We need an responses right away to see how many people would be interested in each of these listed courses--especially for geometry.
Please respond by e-mailing Mary Leggewie to indicate which math classes you would be interested in taking.
The courses will meet twice a week on Tuesday and Friday mornings. Each class session lasts an hour. Classes begin on Tuesday, September 14, 2004. Each course runs one semester (16 weeks of classes) from September to January with a Christmas break in December and with the second semester beginning at the end of January and running to the first week of June with an Easter break that matches Rim Schools. Each course runs one semester except for geometry which requires two semesters (a year) running from September to June 2005.
Tuition per semester is $200 ($180 for Mountains Christian Academy students). Geometry is 2 semesters. You may divide up the course fee over 4 months, if desired. For your convenience, we accept checks & cash, Paypal, Mastercard, Visa, and Discover.
Course materials ($15 materials fee) are supplied for the word problems, advanced
arithmetic,
and algebra courses, but for geometry, we will be using Harold Jacobs' textbook
on Geometry made available (approx $60-70) through Mountains Christian Academy.
We need to know immediately how many people are interested in Geometry since
there is not much time left to get the textbooks ordered.
Here's a link to Harold Jacobs' Geometry:
http://www.whfreeman.com/highschool/book.asp?2001003117
Students need to realize that their success in any of the above courses depends on them doing homework regularly.
Please respond right away with your choice and/or any questions about the math courses for scheduling purposes.
Thank you,
Robin Leggewie (a.k.a Mr. Math)

September 13, 2005 Riley's Apple Farm
Activities:
Intro 30 min
rope making at same time as archery 30 min
corn husk doll/cowboy 30 min
corn to cake 1 hour
gold rush 30
Frontier Cabin 1 hour
PLEASE place your orders now for the following, and bring EXACT change to cover
the extras on the morning of our trip so I can pay for them all at
once.
Lunch (specify turkey & provolone or ham & swiss, chips, drink) $4.85
RULES:
Here are the rules, etc. Please read now so if you have any questions you won't
be panicking on the day of the trip!
I'm not sure if the bees are a problem this year, so you might still consider
wearing long sleeves and long pants to protect yourself, and if you
are allergic, bring your medication if needed. Closed toed shoes are also recommended
by Riley's. There is a gift shop that will be open all day. We will have a lunch
break, and they are offering lunch for purchase if you would like (if reserved
in advance), or you can bring your own. If you think you'd like to buy lunch,
let me know if you can so I can just give her an approximate number.
Please keep watch over your own children and their behavior so we can be a
good example. You might take a granola bar for the kids to eat mid-morning
since many of us will be eating breakfast earlier than usual! (I remember my
kids being STARVED by lunch time).
We will assemble in the Appleseed Theater.
Farm Animals:
Dogs must not be petted, don't chase chickens and ducks or pick them up. Sheep
should not be fed while penned or approached while grazing. Chick and
duck feed may be made available for children to feed with proper instruction.
Apple Trees:
Do not allow children to pick apples, climb trees or pull on branches.Riley's
is a "working apple orchard" and depends on a marketable
crop. Apple picking can be arranged before or after the tour.
Safety:
As a working farm, we depend on tools that can be dangerous to children. No
tools or equipment should be touched unless under supervision by farm staff.
Children should not be allowed to explore the farm themselves. The farm is not
a park. Wild animals frequent the woods and orchards. Snakes take
shelter in tall grass and under logs. Stinging nettle abounds in creek beds.
Children should stay on cleared pathways.
Common Sense:
Walk, don't run. Sticks and rocks should lay where nature puts them. Fences
are boundaries, not benches. Wear a jacket and long pants when cold weather
approaches. Period attire welcome! Advise staff of any medical problems or medications
before tour begins.
The Log Cabin:
The log cabin is Dennis & Sharon's home and is not open for viewing. It
was built in 1979 from logs shipped from Montana and is heated with wood!
DIRECTIONS:
Please take a map so you won't get lost.Take the 10 FWY east. About 6 miles
east beyond the intersection of the 10 with the 30, exit the freeway in
Yucaipa onto Yucaipa Blvd (left turn) and continue east on Yucaipa Blvd. and
then turn north on Oak Glen Road. Continue on Oak Glen Road past the village
of Oak Glen, and as it winds southward, you will come upon Riley's Log Cabin
Farm and Orchard on the left.
We are going to Riley's LOG CABIN FARM AND ORCHARD, (NOT Riley's Farm). The address is 12201 Oak Glen Road, Yucaipa.
Be sure to use the correct driveway (since two farms have similar names). The
one we want has a LOG CABIN in the center of the sign and a banjo on the
top right, and our name (Probably Arrowhead Homeschool or Mountains Christian
Academy) will be on the sign.

of March Field Air Museum from 1918 to present can be seen after the tour. Please
arrive at the museum about 10:15 so I can collect your money... cash only, bring
exact change.
The museum sent me some activitiy worksheets for the kids who want to participate
in a scavenger hunt. (looking for information/facts throughout the museum) I
will distribute these at the beginning of the field trip.
Please RSVP to Karen by Sept. 21st at kkmcp@msn.com.
I need to know the ages of those attending so I can keep track of the cost.
If you have any questions you can call me at 338-3160. The number for the museum
in (951) 697-6600.
About the museum...
The March Field Air Museum offers an opportunity to share history with your
students. Students will take a walk through the past and will discover what
really happened and what lessons have been learned. The museum has displayed
on its flight line and it's main building over 65 historic aircrafts (including
the SR-71 Blackbird, the world's fastest aircraft) and thousands of artifacts.
Also, the museum is more than a historic site and collection... It is a guardian
of the heritage of the men and women who have defended our freedom. Exciting
exhibits bring to life our country's major conflicts.
Tuesday, November 1, 2005 at 11:00 (NEW TIME) (arrive no later than 10:45 a.m.), Lifetales Helen Keller
I've reserved 30 spots for the Lifetales production of Helen Keller at Lifehouse Theater (www.lifehousetheater.com). This was a fabulous production! If you saw the play a few months ago, this is a shortened version of it. Mountain homeschooler Karen Kennedy has the role of Annie Sullivan, Helen Keller's teacher.
Please RSVP by e-mail, and put your payment ($6 each) in the mail to me. I must have it by 10/19. The seats are first come, first served. Mail your payment to Mountains Christian Academy, PO Box 1004, Twin Peaks, CA 92391.
Friday November 4, 2005 Magic Mountain Homeschool Day. E-mail Mary for details.
Monday, November 7, 2005 Photo Day at Church of the Woods: We'll be doing Fife & Drum (and homeschool) photos on Monday, November 7. This is a new photographer to us--Bob Ketchum of Brad Human Photography, and he is using digital shots. We do NOT have time for everyone to check the photos as he goes along.
I will be doing my best to spread out the photos so that we don't get so far behind, but there very likely will be waiting! So please don't shoot the messenger (ME!). Expect at least an hour.
The photos are very reasonably priced. You will select how many "sheets" you want at $7 each sheet. A sheet might be the following configuration: 8x10, two 5x7s, four 3x5s, eight wallets, two 5x7 and 4 wallets, or a sheet of 16 minis. You will need to pay up front for the photos, but you can adjust later on our proof date. Reorders later will be $10 per sheet plus $3 shipping.
I am scheduling appointments for the full afternoon, starting around 12:30 or 1, going till 5:30 or so. Please consider how many poses you plan on doing so I can figure out the time a little better than last year.
FIFE & DRUM: You will be photographed whether or not you want to buy so that we will have them for the yearbook and publicity as needed. IF you are in uniform, please wear ALL parts--including shoes. If your shoes don't fit, you can swap with someone there if needed for the photo. You will be photographed from shoes to hat, and also a "head shot" with your sticks or fife. If you do not have a uniform, wear street clothes (no hats).
Poses possible: We'll be doing 2 shots for each corps member, and if you'd like to switch to street clothes, we'll fit you in after the next group. You might want a family shot, buddy shot, sibling shot, etc. ID cards will be available too, including faculty IDs for you homeschooling parents (handy for store discounts). Some corps members will prefer "not smiling" photos for the more authentic look. You may take both and choose which you like later. It will bring things to a crawl if everyone wants a quick peek at their shots in progress. Please tell me when you make your appointment what you'd like to do so I can allot the time accordingly.
So, absorb all this and give me a call for your appointment. I know that all the F&D members will want appointments close to rehearsal, but please be flexible on this as we have some that come from work or sports/tutoring and need those later appointments. If you are able to come early for photos and come back later for rehearsal, it might possibly make things easier. Let me know if you are flexible. Those coming for homeschool photos only need to choose earlier times if at all possible.
The photographer will be sending ME the proof disk, and I will come on a subsequent Monday evening for you to select your final choices from my laptop at rehearsal. If you cannot come then, I will have one afternoon available at my house. Proofing on the Internet didn't work too well last year. If you don't choose, we will chose for you based on what you wanted to order (that's OK--but you must understand that this is YOUR choice if you choose not to proof).
Thanks in advance!
Mary

Friday, November 11 from 8:30-10:00 a.m. (MORNING) : Ice Skating at the International Training Center in Lake Arrowhead.
I have reserved an hour and a half of PRIVATE ice time for us!!! I strongly
recommend arriving at 8:15 a.m. to get your skates so you aren't wasting
ice skating time getting the right skates on. If this works well, I will book
this regularly. Please be sure your children behave well and are respectful
of employees and equipment. This is a trial run--don't kill me if there are
kinks to be worked out! If we do not have payment from 50 people by 11/2, I
will have to cancel.
The RULES:
I MUST have your payment AND signed waiver for all skaters (click here for waiver) by 11/2. If you already have a waiver on file, you do not need to complete another. I will cancel the date if we don't have 50 prepaid skaters by this date. We are getting 1.5 hours of skating including skates for $7.50 per skater. If you have your own skates, it will still cost $7.50 each skater. Spectators are free, but it is chilly -- 45-50 degrees inside and as far as I know, there is no warm area to watch.
Your skater should bring warm clothes, and mittens (they can be thin gloves--just something). I personally advise helmets, but they are not required. The only time I have ever been knocked out was ice skating... Bike/ski helmets will work too... They are not available to rent at the rink.

Thursday,
November 17, 2005: Cal Poly Arabian Horse Show 10:30 - 11:30 a.m.
I have reserved 30 spots for their one-hour Thursday show on 11/17 at 10:30. We need to arrive between 10 and 10:15.
This is their "Sunday" show done on Thursday. They have a rider in costume, English & Western, drill, trick course, jumping, etc. After the show, we can wander through the barn.
All ages are welcome, $1 each. You may pay me there--I would appreciate exact cash. Please RSVP to me, Mary, by 11/15 so I know how many to tell them if it changes a lot.
This is their last show for the fall, and if it rains, they cancel.
Directions:
10 fwy west
Exit Kellogg, turn left
Left on the first street, Citrus Lane
Right immediately on Ecalyptus
On the left side, you will see horses, the arena, a big fountain and a tall flag pole. Someone will direct us to parking from there. It sounds like arriving early gets you better parking.
Perhaps we can meet somewhere afterwards for a picnic.
November 4-19, 2005 Loma Linda: Messiah's Mansion
We're going to do this after the Cal Poly Arabian Horse show on 11/17. Tours
are 1-8 p.m. and it's free (donation box available). It's in Loma Linda, and
they start a new tour every 15 minutes. There are 5 stations, so the whole tour
is 1 hour 15 minutes. It sounds fascinating. It may be the
exhibit that was at Lake Gregory Community Church--I'm not sure.

Friday, December 9 from 8:30-10:00 a.m.
The RULES:
I MUST have your payment AND signed waiver for all skaters (click here for waiver) by 12/1.
Simple snacks are available for purchase: sodas, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, candy, water, lunch soups, popcorn, chips, etc. It IS OK to bring your own food to private ice time.
Please mail your $7.50 per person to: Mountains Christian Academy, PO Box 1004, Twin Peaks, CA 92391
NO REFUNDS: I will refund all money if we have to cancel due to not having 50+ skaters. Otherwise, if the event happens, your money is NOT refundable after 12/1 (unless I cancel the trip due to lake of interest). Please RSVP NOW so I can get an idea if we'll have enough people.
Saturday, December 17, 2005, 4:00-8:30 Civil War Ball-- Lake Arrowhead Baptist Church.
Lake Arrowhead Baptist Church
1103 N. State Hwy 173, Lake Arrowhead (On the north side of the lake, near the
hospital)
$25 per family, payable by December 1 to Mountains Christian Academy, PO Box 1004, Twin Peaks, CA 92391.
RSVP: Please RSVP NOW so we can plan more accurately. Mary Leggewie 337-7391
WHO: Open to Mountain Homeschoolers and Mountain Fifes and Drums.
Dance Caller: Dennis Riley of Riley's Log Cabin in Oak Glen will be calling the dances for us (music by CD).
Please come in costume if possible! If not, wear blue jeans for the boys, flowing dresses for the girls (much more fun if they SPIN). Adults are encouraged to come in costume. See page 2 of the photos from last year's ball for costume ideas and some instructions.
BRING:
Potluck dish to share that is not messy/drippy, and a dessert of some sort.
Drinks and paper goods provided.
MENTAL PREPARATION:
Make sure your boys know that they need to be courteous and invite a different
girl to dance each time. This is a very non-threatening dance--we'll be instructed
how to dance by Mr. Riley. Let your shy boys know that they'll only be with
the girl they ask to dance 10-15 seconds for most dances! And be sure that they
ask girls they don't know, too! MEN---help us out here!!!

HELP:
If you are able to come early to help set up, or stay late to help clean up,
it would be GREATLY appreciated!
We're gonna have a GREAT time! PRAY for good weather!
Mary
