Saturday, January 28, 2006, 5:00-6:30 p.m.: Ice Skating at the International Training Center in Lake Arrowhead.
I have reserved an hour and a half of PRIVATE ice time for homeschoolers. I strongly recommend arriving at 4:45 p.m. to get your skates so you aren't wasting ice skating time getting the right skates on.
The RULES:
I MUST have your payment AND signed waiver for all skaters (waiver here: http://www.mountainschristian.com/forms/IceCastleWaiver.pdf) by 1/19. If you already have a waiver on file, you do not need to complete another. I will cancel the date if we don't have 50 prepaid skaters by this date. We are getting 1.5 hours of skating including skates for $7.50 per skater. If you have your own skates, it will still cost $7.50 each skater. Spectators are free, but it is chilly -- 45-50 degrees inside with only a small poorly-heated area.
Your skater should bring warm clothes, and mittens (they can be thin gloves--just something). I personally advise helmets, but they are not required. The only time I have ever been knocked out was ice skating... Bike/ski helmets will work too... They are not available to rent at the rink.
Simple snacks are available for purchase: sodas, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, candy, water, lunch soups, popcorn, chips, etc. It IS OK to bring your own food to private ice time. There is a microwave and toaster accessible.
Please mail your $7.50 per person to: Mountains Christian Academy, PO Box 1004, Twin Peaks, CA 92391
NO REFUNDS: I will refund all money if we have to cancel due to not having our minimum of 50+ skaters. Otherwise, if the event happens, your money is not refundable after 1/19 (unless I cancel the trip due to lack of interest). If we make our minimum, I MAY be able to give you a refund if you're unable to come, or apply it to our next skating date. Please RSVP NOW so I can get an idea if we'll have enough people. It's really important to RSVP early so that we know if we have the numbers we need.

Thursday, April 20, 2006 Missionary Aviation Fellowship (MAF) Field trip. 10 a.m. THIS TRIP IS FULL. I have a waiting list. Runs 1-1.5 hours. We'll go to Smiley Park in Redlands for picnic lunch afterwards. Open K-12 grades. Everyone who takes a seat counts in the count, please make sure your young child doesn't distract the program.
Limit of 50 people--the first 50 to RSVP get the spots, and I'll maintain a waiting list for cancellations.
MAF is moving to Idaho, so this is your last chance. They move June 1, so this will allow us a month to reschedule if we get snowed in (not guaranteed, but hopefully!).
Before this trip, I recommend reading books about Nate Saint and Jim Elliot, and the new movie End of the Spear may be appropriate (I haven't seen it, so I don't know how intense it might be for the little ones).
Read about MAF's mission here: http://www.maf.org
Thursday April 27, 2006 at 10 a.m. Meet the Orchestra at Twin Peaks Community Church on 189 just east of Grandview Road.
Arrowhead Arts Association is wonderful to local homeschoolers! They are donating
a FREE special presentation to the homeschoolers on the mountain!
Many instruments will be demonstrated, and the children will learn about the
sections of the orchestra. This was a lot of fun last time! It's designed for
3rd graders, but open to homeschoolers of all ages. No drop-offs, please. Parents
must attend, or put another parent in charge of their children if they can't
stay. The performance lasts about an hour.
RSVP is IMPORTANT. RSVP to Mary at mary@homeschoolchristian.com

June 3, 2006: Civil War Ball 4-8 p.m. at MPH Middle School. I will need help for this event--we need to set up and clean up FAST. I have not paid for additional "set-up" time. I am particularly interested in clean-up help. Cost at $7 per person, all ages. This will be a potluck dinner; paper goods & drinks are provided. Please bring a main dish and either dessert or salad. E-mail me your RSVP, and mail payment to Leggewie Enterprises, PO Box 1004, Twin Peaks, CA 92391. Naturally a trip to Washington, D.C. featuring a tour of Capitol Hill, viewing the Congress and the Senate in session, along with seeing our Supreme Court in action would be the most desirable. But now, there is a local option for your students.
60 minutes on Capital Hill tour:
During your visit, students will find six different hands-on learning stations.
A film describing the obstacles our founding fathers overcame in establishing our government.
a.. Tests and puzzles to challenge student's knowledge of our government and
its structure.
b.. Biographies describing the lives of famous Presidents.
c.. A detailed scale model of Capitol Hill including our famous monuments.
d.. Detailed replicas depicting the interiors and the House, Senate, and Supreme
Court buildings in session.
e.. The Oval Office - the highlight of the tour.
An exact replica built by Hollywood set designers, this will be an
experience one will not soon forget. Bring your cameras!

RULES:
Here are the rules, etc. Please read now so if you have any questions you won't
be panicking on the day of the trip!
I'm not sure if the bees are a problem this year, so you might still consider
wearing long sleeves and long pants to protect yourself, and if you
are allergic, bring your medication if needed. Closed toed shoes are also recommended
by Riley's. There is a gift shop that will be open all day. We will have a lunch
break, and they are offering lunch for purchase if you would like (if reserved
in advance), or you can bring your own. If you think you'd like to buy lunch,
let me know if you can so I can just give her an approximate number.
Please keep watch over your own children and their behavior so we can be a
good example. You might take a granola bar for the kids to eat mid-morning
since many of us will be eating breakfast earlier than usual! (I remember my
kids being STARVED by lunch time).
We will assemble in the Appleseed Theater.
Farm Animals:
Dogs must not be petted, don't chase chickens and ducks or pick them up. Sheep
should not be fed while penned or approached while grazing. Chick and
duck feed may be made available for children to feed with proper instruction.
Apple Trees:
Do not allow children to pick apples, climb trees or pull on branches.Riley's
is a "working apple orchard" and depends on a marketable
crop. Apple picking can be arranged before or after the tour.
Safety:
As a working farm, we depend on tools that can be dangerous to children. No
tools or equipment should be touched unless under supervision by farm staff.
Children should not be allowed to explore the farm themselves. The farm is not
a park. Wild animals frequent the woods and orchards. Snakes take
shelter in tall grass and under logs. Stinging nettle abounds in creek beds.
Children should stay on cleared pathways.
Common Sense:
Walk, don't run. Sticks and rocks should lay where nature puts them. Fences
are boundaries, not benches. Wear a jacket and long pants when cold weather
approaches. Period attire welcome! Advise staff of any medical problems or medications
before tour begins.
The Log Cabin:
The log cabin is Dennis & Sharon's home and is not open for viewing. It
was built in 1979 from logs shipped from Montana and is heated with wood!
DIRECTIONS:
Please take a map so you won't get lost.Take the 10 FWY east. About 6 miles
east beyond the intersection of the 10 with the 30, exit the freeway in
Yucaipa onto Yucaipa Blvd (left turn) and continue east on Yucaipa Blvd. and
then turn north on Oak Glen Road. Continue on Oak Glen Road past the village
of Oak Glen, and as it winds southward, you will come upon Riley's Log Cabin
Farm and Orchard on the left. Allow one hour.
We are going to Riley's LOG CABIN FARM AND ORCHARD, (NOT Riley's Farm). The address is 12201 Oak Glen Road, Yucaipa.
Be sure to use the correct driveway (since two farms have similar names). The
one we want has a LOG CABIN in the center of the sign and a banjo on the
top right, and our name (Probably Arrowhead Homeschool or Mountains Christian
Academy) will be on the sign.

Saturday, October 21, 2006. Civil War Ball 4-8 p.m. at MPH Middle School. I will need help for this event--we need to set up and clean up FAST. I have not paid for additional "set-up" time. I have stressed to MPH that the sound system must be ready for us to start as close as we can to 4 p.m. Cost is $12 per person, all ages. Children under 8 are not recommended since it's hard for them to follow directions to dance--it's up to you, but please control your children at all times--it can be dangerous if they get danced on! This will be a potluck dinner; paper goods & drinks are provided. Please bring a main dish and either dessert or salad. RSVP NOW. NO REFUNDS since this is an expensive event to put on, and we have been required to purchase event insurance for Rim Schools. See last year's photos (click here).
Costumes are optional, but fun! Ladies--wear a dress that spins-- gents, where jeans and a plaid shirt! For girls, it's not that hard to make a skirt--just buy 3-5 yards of inexpensive fabric (the width of the fabric will be the length of the skirt) and sew up a back seam and make a drawstring casing at the waist, hem at the bottom. If you have a costume you can loan to someone, please let me know, likewise, if you'd like to borrow one, let me know that too. MEN... the ultimate thrift store if you want to create a uniform from a suit is the Deseret Thrift store in Colton (all those Mormon missionaries must turn in their suits there!). 3-5 Hooped slips are $25 on ebay from Angel's Bridal--see if you can split shipping with someone ($11.95) and place a group order. I have one 30 hooped one that I can loan.
Please make payment to Mountains Christian Academy for $12 each (all ages), PO Box 1004, Twin Peaks, CA 92391. Payment due by OCTOBER 11, 2 p.m. . I need to buy supplies before I leave on vacation (Oct 16-20), so I will be depositing checks on Wednesday, October 11 after MCA library hours.
It is Nutcracker Season, and time to start buying seats. As always these seats are sold on a First Response basis. I will do my best to accommodate those that want to sit together, however the later you purchase your seats the harder that is to do. For those of you that have not previously attended, this is a ticket-less performance. Once a spot is reserved, I will place your reservation into the Seating Chart. This is partially how we are able to keep the price so low for the School Performances. These seats sell out quickly, so please do not wait to make your reservation. This year there will be only one performance available for Home-Schools, Pre-Schools, and any other non-traditional school groups. Here is the info:
