Orange County Area Childrens' Discovery Museum (The Big Cube) on the 5 fwy & main in Santa Ana. Hands-on exhibits, arts & crafts, indoor play area. Taco Bell inside or you can take a picnic to the park across the street. Free admission for Santa Ana residents ONLY is every month on the first Monday of the month. Bower's Museum Santa Ana has a free day. Anyone know which one? Santa Ana Zoo Also has a free day. This was one of our favorite zoos when we lived in Orange County because it's flat and small enough that you could do it in an hour with small children. They have a playground inside and picnic grounds outside. They have an amazing monkey/lemur collection. Anyone know their free day? Orange County Fair I believe they have some free admission days at this fair in July. Knott's Berry Farm has had a toy drive in November in the past in which you get free admission for bringing a toy. Anyone have info? Santa Clarita Valley Placerita Canyon Nature Center Cute little nature center and trails for history and botany. Home of the "Oak of the Golden Dream," where gold was first discovered in CA. Free. San Fernando Valley Gene Autry Museum Free on second Tuesday of the month. My kids (then age 6-12) loved it. Santa Monica Area Cabrillo Marine Museum - Free but has a suggested $2 donation. J. Paul Getty Museum (Santa Monica) is free, but you have to make reservations. I think they might charge for parking. San Gabriel Valley The Arboretum of Los Angeles County (in Sierra Madre, across from Santa Anita Racetrack). Free third Tuesday of the month. Huntington Library - Free first Thursday of the month. Downtown Los Angeles California Science Center is always free Los Angeles Natural History Museum in Exposition Park, downtown L.A. Free on the first Tuesday of the month. Drum & Fife Corps: Kevin Garland, formerly of the Colonial Williamsburg Fifes and Drums, and Cindy Olson (homeschool mom and fife player) are organizing a Fife & Drum corps for the mountain community. We are looking for "recruits" between the age 9-18. This is a great opportunity for your children to learn music, teamwork, discipline and responsibility. New recruits will join in October. Members must commit to a weekly rehearsal and daily practice at home. Call me with questions at 336-7336. Ice Castle International Training Center - Skate Day: Saturday public skating is available at the International Training Center as follows: Group lessons and recreation sessions are available at the Ice Castle International Training Center on Burnt Mill Road in Lake Arrowhead. Rec.sessions (open to anyone) are Sat. 3:15-6:00 and Sunday 12:30-2:00. The cost is $7.00 for each session (it includes skate rental). Also, skating school is Saturday mornings. Advanced lessons are from 8:30-9:00. Practice session 9:00-9:30, and beginners' lessons 9:30-10:00. The cost for each lesson is $9.00 (if you sign up for 6-8 weeks). Lessons include skate rental and the Saturday afternoon rec. session. ClubsAre you interested in Cub/Boy Scouts?
