Math Tutoring and Classes
Robin Leggewie is a homeschool father who has a heart for teaching children. Your student needs a notebook, paper, and pencils.
Classes composed of 5-15 students are forming now.
Advanced Arithmetic This course requires no background in math, and will have your student ready to begin algebra in four months. 2 one-hour classes per week. Recommended for 6th grade and up. Covers and masters addition, subtraction and multiplication, division, fractions, decimals and percentages. Completion of this class is excellent preparation for Algebra classes.
Algebra 1A. This course is for the child who is ready to start algebra. Placement exam required for anyone who has not taken Advanced Arithmetic. This course will introduce basic algebraic terms and procedures in a logical, sequential manner using visual and verbal cues to enhance learning and retention. There is a focus on understanding rather than merely rote repetition. This four month semester covers: combining, distributing, exponents, isolating, factoring (including the difference of two squares and trinomials). Algebra I-A is excellent both as a refresher for those who have struggled with algebra before and as a first course for any student who has mastered fractions, decimals and percents. All new students must take a placement test.
Algebra 1B. Pre-requisite Algebra 1A or placement exam. This is a continuation of Algebra I-A and will cover: algebraic subtraction and long division, fractions and slopes, complex fractions, simultaneous equations, solving trinomials, inequalities, graphing on coordinate plane, graphing quadratic expressions.
Word Problems. To be taken after Algebra 1A or 1B. This course makes word problems easy! The course covers all basic types of word problems and teaches how to solve them easily using algebra. This is an absolute must for students who will be taking algebra in college. The techniques learned here will last a life time because of their universal usefulness and ease of application.
Summer refresher course: Covering fractions, decimals, and percentages in a 7-week course. Ok as a refresher, or for a child 5th-6-th grade or above who is ready and willing to do daily homework. $70. $65 for MCA students. Parents are free. Beginning Tuesday, June 22. 9:30-10:30 Tuesdays and Thursdays, ending August 5th.
Geometry: This is a two-semester course, using Harold Jacobs' Geometry: http://www.whfreeman.com/highschool/book.asp?2001003117
The courses will meet twice a week on Tuesday and Friday mornings. Each class session lasts an hour. Classes begin on Tuesday, September 14, 2004. Each course runs one semester (16 weeks of classes) from September to January with a Christmas break in December and with the second semester beginning at the end of January and running to the first week of June with an Easter break that matches Rim Schools. Each course runs one semester except for geometry which requires two semesters (a year) running from September to June 2005.
Tuition per semester is $200 ($180 for Mountains Christian Academy students). Geometry is 2 semesters. You may divide up the course fee over 4 months, if desired. For your convenience, we accept checks & cash, Paypal, Mastercard, Visa, and Discover.
Course materials ($15 materials fee) are supplied for the word problems, advanced arithmetic, and algebra courses, but for geometry, we will be using Harold Jacobs' textbook on Geometry made available (approx $60-70) through Mountains Christian Academy. We need to know immediately how many people are interested in Geometry since there is not much time left to get the textbooks ordered.
